What the graph of y = x² − 3 is telling you
- It's a parabola. Because x is squared, a positive and a negative input give the same output, so the two arms mirror each other across the y-axis.
- The lowest point is (0, −3). That vertex is where the curve turns around; the “− 3” slid the whole parabola three units down.
- It crosses zero at x = ±√3 ≈ ±1.73. Those crossings are the equation's two real solutions, exactly where y = 0.
